Who's Who?

Roles of Governors In School

The governing body is made up of different types of governors, each with a specific role and perspective.

Each type contributes different perspectives—whether representing stakeholders or providing specialist skills—but all share responsibility for strategic leadership, accountability, and financial oversight. This mix ensures balanced and effective governance.

What All Governors Do (Shared Role)

Regardless of type, all governors have the same core responsibilities:

1. Strategic Leadership

  • Set vision, values, and long-term goals

2. Accountability

  • Hold the headteacher to account for performance
  • Monitor pupil outcomes and school improvement

3. Financial oversight

  • Ensure money is spent effectively

Parent Governors

Who they are:

  • Parents of children currently attending the school
  • Usually elected by other parents

Role:

  • Represent the views and interests of parents
  • Provide insight into how school decisions affect families
  • Contribute to strategic decision-making

They bring the parent perspective, not just their own personal opinions

Staff Governors

Who they are:

  • Members of school staff (teaching or support staff)
  • Elected by staff

Role:

  • Provide insight into day-to-day school life
  • Help governors understand how policies impact staff and pupils
  • Contribute to discussions from an internal viewpoint

They do not represent all staff opinions, but offer professional insight.

Local Authority (LA) Governors

Who they are:

  • Appointed by the local council

Role:

  • Provide a link between the school and the local authority
  • Bring knowledge of local policies and education standards
  • Support accountability and compliance

They do not “represent” the council but bring local authority expertise.

Co-opted Governors

Who they are:

  • Appointed by the governing body itself
  • Chosen for their skills and experience (e.g., finance, law, education)

Role:

  • Strengthen the governing body with specialist knowledge
  • Support strategic planning and school improvement

Appointed based on skills, not representation.

Headteacher (Headteacher Governor)

Who they are:

  • The school’s headteacher
  • Automatically part of the governing body (unless they opt out)

Role:

  • Advise governors on school performance, staffing, and teaching
  • Implement decisions made by the governing body
  • Bridge leadership and governance

Responsible for running the school, while governors focus on strategy.
