Leicester schools follow strict guidelines set by the government when preparing food, providing children with a healthy tasty meal each school day. Copies of our current meal menus can be found at the bottom of this page.

 

Universal infant free school meals

 

Every maintained school in Leicester provides a 'universal free school meal' for pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. This follows a recommendation in the school food plan which aims to increase the number of children reaching good food in schools which will have a positive impact on children.

 

Is my child entitled to free school meals?

From the 1st June there will be two categories of benefits-based free school meals:

  • Targeted FSM which continues to be based on the existing threshold, covering pupils who are in households in receipt of universal credit with annual household earnings of no more than £7,400

     

  • Expanded FSM, a new category covering pupils who do not qualify for targeted FSM, but who are in households receiving universal credit.
  •  

Only families who meet the ‘targeted FSM’ criteria will attract pupil premium funding for the school.

From Monday 1 June 2026, children in households in receipt of universal credit, with annual household earnings above £7,400 will be entitled to 'expanded' free school meals.

If your child was previously refused free school meals, you can apply again from Monday 1 June 2026.

Applications are accepted from Monday 1 June 2026 and children who qualify under this expanded eligibility will receive free school meals only, from Tuesday 1 September 2026.

How much do school meals cost?

A two course school meal costs just £2.75 for a child in Y3 - Y6. It is free to a child in Foundation Stage or KS1 (Universal Free Meal) or if you are entitled to Free School Meals. Meals meet the government guidelines for a healthy nutritious meal. 

 

How do I pay for my child's meal?

You can pay for your child's meal via Parentapp. If you need support with this please come into the office who can process card payments for you or give you a code to take to a payment counter. 

You order your child's meal a week in advance on our school app.

 

Can my child's school provide a vegetarian meal?

Yes, a healthy and tasty vegetarian option is available on a daily basis, our primary menus are based on a variety of dishes. 

 

Can my child's school provide multicultural meals?

The menu reflects the wider school community and includes dishes from a range of cultural backgrounds.  

 

Securing halal compliance

Our school meals are cooked at Taylor Rd Primary school by ATM. Taylor Rd Primary School is fully Halal Certified  We do not serve any non-halal meats during Spinney Hill school meals, the other options are vegetarian or vegan meals.  This information is listed on each meal as parents order meals on the school payment system.

 

What is the policy on nut allergies?

We do not knowingly use any nut products or products derived from nuts in our kitchens. However we cannot guarantee that our food is free from nut products. If your child does suffer from a nut allergy or any other known allergies  please contact the school or Leicestershire Traded Services (https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools-colleges-and-academies/school-food ) and our dietician can create an appropriate menu.

 

My child is allergic to egg / wheat / dairy products

We would ask that you or your child ’s dietician contact Leicestershire Traded Services (https://www.leicestershire.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools-colleges-and-academies/school-food with your child’s medical referral. We can then arrange for an appropriate menu for your child.
