Science Curriculum Knowledge Overview
Teachers refer to the to the Knowledge Overview documents for each subject in order to identify the core knowledge – ‘the facts’ – which they want children to know and retain, and which will become the focus for retrieval practice. This will also include key figures within the subject. Core knowledge, the essential knowledge, is highlighted on teachers' medium term plans and the contextual knowledge - we refer to it as the ‘the hinterland’ knowledge – is left. Teachers understand that the hinterland knowledge provides the structure or narrative for their teaching - the story behind the facts.
