Each writing unit has a 'Spotlight Focus' which will usually be two grammar skills that need to be included. We teach individual lessons (with practice short writes) so that children understand how to use them, then we assess their finished pieces based on their independent understanding.
- expanding nouns with adjectives
e.g. lots of glistening eyes
- using prepositions to explain where things are in relation to other things
e.g. In front of the wolf, there is...
- expanded noun phrases (adjectives before the noun and expanded after the noun with 'with' and prepositions)
e.g. a blue and white dress with a lace collar
- prepositions
e.g. On her feet, she wore...
- subordinating conjunctions and how to punctuate them correctly
e.g.
I carried grandma's basket because it was heavy.
Because it was heavy, I carried grandma's basket.
- fronted adverbials
e.g. Without warning, she slipped on a puddle of water.
